My Approach to Counseling

My Approach to Counseling

I’m a relational therapist. What does that mean for you? It means I believe the relationship we build in therapy is an important part of the work. I’m engaged and curious. I ask questions, make observations, and have actual conversations with you. I’m not interested in sitting silently across from you while repeatedly asking, “And how does that make you feel?”

I believe you already have an incredible capacity for change and growth within you. Sometimes, however, that capacity gets buried under trauma, shame, fear, expectations, unhealthy patterns, or beliefs about ourselves that we’ve picked up along the way. Therapy can help uncover those things, challenge the beliefs that no longer serve you, and make it easier to access your own answers and solutions.

I also value honesty and directness. I’m not afraid to challenge you when I think it could be helpful, and I believe a good therapist should be someone who can both support you through difficult moments and tell you something you may not necessarily want to hear.

At the same time, I believe therapy should include all aspects of life, including lighthearted moments. I bring humor, warmth, and playfulness into my work because I think those things belong in the therapy room, too.
